The I²C interface lets the host controller set the charge current, termination threshold, and safety timer without external resistors — useful when the same board must handle different battery capacities across product variants.
Protection and package for production
On-chip fault protection includes over-temperature and over-voltage, which shuts down the pass FET before the die exceeds its safe operating area or the battery sees an overvoltage condition. The I²C bus also allows the host to read fault flags, so the system firmware can log a charge abort instead of just browning out.
What the 2.5 A rating means for your BOM
At 2.5 A, the linear pass element dissipates (Vin - Vbatt) × 2.5 A as heat. If your thermal budget is tight, consider a switching charger; if you need a simple, low-noise linear stage for a single-cell portable, this part keeps the BOM count low.
