Single-cell Li-Ion charger with USB input and 1.5 A ceiling
The BQ24073RGTTG4 from Texas Instruments is a linear single-cell Li-Ion battery charger IC designed to draw power from a USB port. It delivers a programmable constant charge current up to 1.5 A, with the charge voltage regulated to 4.2 V for the battery pack. The device integrates fault protection against over-temperature, over-voltage, reverse current, and short circuit, reducing the need for external monitoring components.
Charge current and thermal budget at 1.5 A
At the 1.5 A maximum charge current, the linear regulator dissipates power as heat equal to (VIN - VBAT) × ICHG. The programmable timer and current features let the designer set the charge profile without external resistors on the ISET pin — a single resistor from the ISET pin to GND sets the charge current, and the timer pin sets the safety timeout.
The 16-VFQFN exposed-pad package requires a thermal pad on the PCB for proper heat sinking.
