Single-cell Li-ion charger with 1.5 A ceiling and 16 V input tolerance
The Texas Instruments BQ24070RHLR is a linear charger IC for single-cell Lithium Ion or Polymer battery packs. It delivers a programmable constant charge current up to 1.5 A max, sourced from a supply rail that can go as high as 16 V — covering USB 5 V, 9 V, and 12 V wall adapters without a separate input regulator. The part integrates over-temperature, reverse-current, and short-circuit fault protection, so the BOM does not need a separate supervisor or protection FET for basic charging duty.
Package and mounting
At 1.5 A the power dissipation in a linear charger is the voltage drop across the pass element times the current. If the input is 5 V and the battery is at 3.7 V, the drop is 1.3 V × 1.5 A ≈ 2 W — that heat has to go into the PCB copper through the 20-VQFN exposed pad. The 16 V max supply means this charger can sit on a 12 V automotive rail or a 12 V wall wart, but not on a 24 V industrial bus — that would exceed the abs-max and pop the part. For 24 V systems you step down first or pick a different charger family.
