What this Li-Ion charger brings to the BOM
It handles a programmable constant charge current up to 1A from a supply rail rated to 16.5V maximum, which covers USB, 5V wall adapters, and unregulated 12V inputs without an extra pre-regulator. The charge termination voltage is fixed at 4.2V per the cell chemistry spec, so no external resistor divider sets the float voltage — just program the charge current and timer.
Protection set — what is built in
Three hardwired fault protections are on-die: over-voltage on the input, over-temperature on the die, and output short-circuit. No external comparator or supervisor needed for the basic safety envelope. The programmable timer provides a backup charge-termination watchdog if the current taper does not finish the cycle — useful when the battery is deeply discharged and the normal voltage threshold takes longer to hit.
Package and layout reality
Surface-mount only — no socket option, so field replacement means hot-air or reflow.
