The BQ24038RHLT is a linear battery charger IC from Texas Instruments' bqTINY™ III series, designed for single-cell Lithium-Ion or Lithium-Polymer packs. It accepts a supply up to 16V and delivers a programmable constant-current charge up to 1.5A, with a battery regulation voltage of 4.36V. The charger integrates fault protection against over-temperature, reverse current, and short circuits, and includes programmable charge-current and timer features.
With a 16V maximum input rating, the BQ24038RHLT can tolerate 5V USB bus voltage with margin for cable drop and transients, and can also run from unregulated wall adapters up to 16V. The 1.5A maximum charge current allows fast charging of a typical 1000–2000 mAh single-cell pack, but the actual current is set by the external programming resistor – so you trade charge time against thermal dissipation in the linear pass element. Because this is a linear charger, the power dissipated equals (VIN – VBAT) × ICHG. The datasheet layout recommendation for the pad is critical; skipping it derates the usable charge current.
