The output is adjustable from a 2.5V minimum to a 36V maximum via two external resistors. That 36V ceiling covers 24V industrial rails and 12V automotive buses with headroom. The 100 µA cathode current is the minimum needed to keep the reference in regulation — below that the output drifts. In practice, bias the cathode with a resistor to a supply that delivers at least 100 µA at the programmed output voltage, plus whatever load current the shunt sinks. The 15 mA maximum output current handles driving an optocoupler LED or biasing a small-signal transistor without a buffer.
