With zero drivers and four receivers on-chip, this is a receive-only interface — you pair it with a separate RS-485 driver or transceiver for the transmit half of the bus. The 50 mV hysteresis cleans up the differential signal at the far end of a factory-floor cable run, so the UART sees clean edges even when the common-mode voltage wanders.

At 3.3 V the input common-mode range still handles the -7 V to +12 V bus voltage swing that RS-485 specifies, so it survives ground offsets between nodes on a long trunk.
