IR emitter for optical sensing and communication links
The ELM-4001 is an Infrared (IR) LED from the ELM-4000 series, emitting at 880 nm in a Side View orientation. The 880 nm wavelength sits in the near-IR band, commonly used for photoelectric sensors, remote control receivers, and optical data links where the receiver's peak sensitivity aligns with this emission window. The Through Hole, Radial package allows hand-assembly or wave-solder integration on a PCB. The Side View orientation means the emission axis is perpendicular to the board surface, suited for edge-mounted or panel-mounted indicators where the beam projects sideways rather than upward.
Forward voltage and drive considerations
Forward voltage (Vf) is specified at 1.5 V maximum — a typical value for GaAs-based IR emitters. The series resistor must be sized to limit current based on the supply rail voltage minus this Vf drop; a 5 V rail with a 180 Ω resistor yields roughly 20 mA forward current, a common drive level for these devices.
