Logic-level gate drive in a TO-92-3 package
The Z0103MA 2AL2 is a sensitive-gate TRIAC from STMicroelectronics, designed for low-power AC switching where the gate trigger current must be compatible with logic-level outputs. Rated for 600 V off-state voltage (Vdrm) and 1 A RMS on-state current (It(RMS)), it handles typical 230 VAC or 277 VAC line switching for loads like small fans, solenoids, relays, or incandescent lamps. The 8 A / 8.5 A non-repetitive surge rating (Itsm at 50/60 Hz) covers inrush from capacitive or filament loads. The through-hole TO-92-3 package with formed leads (TO-226AA) suits point-to-point wiring or PCB mounting where board space is not the driving constraint.
Hold current and gate sensitivity — the design decisions
Maximum hold current (Ih) is 7 mA. In a low-current load (e.g., a 5 W fan on 230 VAC draws roughly 22 mA RMS), the triac will latch and commutate reliably. For loads near or below the hold current, the triac may drop out at the zero-cross — a snubber or a minimum load resistor may be needed. Because the gate is sensitive (3 mA max Igt), it is also more susceptible to noise-induced turn-on. A gate-to-MT1 resistor (typically 100 Ω to 1 kΩ) and a small capacitor (0.01 µF) close to the triac are standard practice to prevent false triggering from fast transients or coupled noise on the gate trace.
