Single-channel high-side switch for 12V and 24V loads
The VN5E050AJTR-E is a single N-channel high-side power switch from STMicroelectronics' VIPower™ family, designed to drive resistive, capacitive, and inductive loads on 4.5V to 28V supply rails. Its 50mOhm max on-resistance keeps conduction losses low at the 19A peak output current, making it suitable for lamp inrush, DC motor start-up, and solenoid actuation in automotive and industrial systems. The switch is controlled by a simple On/Off logic input (non-inverting), requires no external Vcc supply, and integrates fixed current limiting, over-voltage clamp, over-temperature shutdown, and open-load detection. The PowerSSO-12 package supports surface-mount assembly with a thermal pad for heat sinking.
Parametric fit for high-inrush and continuous loads
With a maximum Rds(on) of 50mOhm, the switch dissipates roughly 1.8W at 6A continuous (I²R), which the PowerSSO-12 package can handle with adequate PCB copper area. The 19A max output covers cold-filament inrush from a 55W halogen bulb (typically 10-12A peak) and motor starting currents that can exceed 15A for tens of milliseconds. The load supply range of 4.5V to 28V means the same part works on a 12V automotive battery (9V-16V operating) and a 24V truck system (18V-32V cranking). The over-voltage protection clamps the output during load-dump transients up to 40V, reducing the need for external TVS diodes.
The part is not a direct second-source for the older TDE1747FPT (which has a 1A output and narrower temperature range), but both serve as high-side switches in similar system positions.
Protection set covers real-world fault scenarios
Fixed current limiting prevents the output from exceeding the safe operating area during a hard short to ground. Over-temperature shutdown protects the die if the junction exceeds 150°C, with auto-restart after cooling. Open-load detection flags a disconnected load when the switch is off, useful for diagnostics in automotive body controllers.
