Product details

What this high-side driver does on the board

The STMicroelectronics VN5050AJ-E is a single-channel high-side driver from the VIPower™ family, built to switch a grounded load on the high side of the supply rail. It integrates an N-channel power MOSFET with a 50 mOhm max Rds(on), a charge pump to keep the gate driven when the output is on, and a full set of protection circuits — current limiting, over-temperature, and over-voltage — all in a PowerSSO-12 surface-mount package.

12 A output — the load budget and the thermal reality

The 12 A continuous output rating is the absolute maximum at the device level. At 12 A, the I²R loss through the 50 mOhm Rds(on) hits 7.2 W, which the PowerSSO-12 package must dump into the PCB copper.

The load supply range covers 5 V logic rails, 12 V automotive battery lines (including cold-crank dips down to 4.5 V), and 24 V industrial bus voltages. The device does not require a separate Vcc supply — the gate drive is derived from the load voltage via an internal charge pump, which means the driver works as a simple on/off switch controlled by a logic-level input.

For a BOM line that still calls out this MPN, the only sourcing path is through independent distribution — surplus stock, new-old-stock, or broker channels.

Protection set — what shuts it down and what brings it back

The driver includes fixed current limiting, over-temperature shutdown, and over-voltage clamping. The Auto Restart feature means that after an over-temperature fault clears, the output re-enables automatically — useful for lamp or motor loads where a brief overload is expected, but something to account for in a design that expects latched-off behaviour.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Rds(on) of the VN5050AJ-E?

The maximum Rds(on) is 50 mOhm, specified at 25°C junction temperature. Actual on-resistance rises with temperature — expect roughly 1.5× the 25°C value at 150°C junction.
