What this flyback switcher brings to a 65 W offline supply
The STMicroelectronics VIPER53ESPTR-E is a monolithic offline flyback switcher IC that integrates the PWM controller and a 620 V avalanche-rugged power MOSFET into a single PowerSO-10 package with an exposed bottom pad for thermal management. It delivers up to 65 W of isolated output power, making it a fit for AC-DC auxiliary supplies, industrial power bricks, and LED lighting drivers where board space and component count matter. The part includes a full set of on-chip fault protections: current limiting, overload, over-temperature, and short-circuit — so the external BOM stays lean, with no need for a separate supervisor IC.
Supply rails and start-up behaviour
The Vcc pin operates from 8.4 V to 19 V, with a start-up threshold of 11.5 V. That start-up voltage is high enough to keep the IC off during brown-out conditions below the threshold, which helps prevent half-on states that stress the MOSFET. Designers sizing the Vcc capacitor should account for the start-up current draw until the auxiliary winding takes over.
Switching frequency and control flexibility
The internal oscillator runs up to 300 kHz, which lets the designer shrink the transformer core size compared to a lower-frequency design. Control features include an enable pin, frequency control, and soft-start — the frequency control pin allows external synchronization or frequency dithering for EMI reduction. Soft-start limits inrush during power-up, reducing stress on the output rectifier and bulk capacitor.
Package and thermal reality for the layout
At 65 W output, junction temperature can climb quickly if the thermal path is choked — the -40°C to 150°C junction rating gives headroom, but only if the board copper and vias are sized for the dissipation.
