Product details

65 W flyback with an avalanche-rated 620 V MOSFET

The STMicroelectronics VIPER53ESP-E is a monolithic flyback switcher from the VIPER™ series that integrates a 620 V avalanche-rated power MOSFET and a PWM controller in a single PowerSO-10 package with an exposed bottom pad.

Thermal and protection envelope for industrial environments

The junction temperature range spans -40 to 150 °C, which covers industrial outdoor and enclosed power supplies where ambient temperatures can push 70 °C and self-heating adds another 40-50 °C. The part includes built-in fault protection — current limiting, overload, over-temperature, and short-circuit — so the supply shuts down autonomously on a fault without requiring a supervisor IC or external sense resistor network.

Switching frequency and control flexibility

The internal oscillator runs up to 300 kHz, which lets the designer shrink the flyback transformer core size compared to a 100 kHz design. Control features include an enable pin, frequency control, and soft start — the soft start ramps the duty cycle on power-up to prevent output overshoot and inrush stress on the output capacitor. The supply voltage range is 8.4 to 19 V, with a start-up threshold of 11.5 V.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between VIPER53ESP-E and VIPER53ESPTR-E?

The two parts are electrically identical — same 65 W rating, 620 V MOSFET, and PowerSO-10 package. The difference is the shipping medium: VIPER53ESP-E ships in tube, while VIPER53ESPTR-E ships in tape-and-reel. Choose the reel variant for automated pick-and-place assembly lines.
