Offline flyback switcher with 730V integrated MOSFET
The VIPER22AS-E is an offline flyback switching regulator from STMicroelectronics' VIPER™ series, integrating a 730V avalanche-rugged power MOSFET and a PWM controller in an 8-SOIC package. It delivers up to 7 W of continuous output power from a universal AC input, making it a common choice for auxiliary power supplies in appliances, industrial controls, and AC-DC adapters. The 730V breakdown voltage provides headroom for universal AC input with reflected voltage spikes.
60 kHz fixed frequency and protection set
The internal oscillator runs at 60 kHz fixed frequency. That sets the transformer core size and the EMI filter corner. On-chip fault protection includes current limiting, over-temperature shutdown, and over-voltage protection. These reduce the external component count to a minimum — a bridge rectifier, bulk cap, transformer, and output rectifier are the main bill-of-material items. The supply voltage range (Vcc) spans 8 V to 38 V, and the start-up threshold is 14.5 V. That start-up voltage lets the IC boot from a small auxiliary winding before the main output stabilises.
