Product details

10 W offline switcher with 800 V avalanche-rugged MOSFET

The VIPER16LN integrates a 800 V avalanche-rugged power MOSFET with a PWM controller in a single 7-lead DIP package, delivering up to 10 W in flyback, buck, or buck-boost topologies. The 60 kHz fixed switching frequency keeps the transformer small and the EMI predictable — no external frequency-setting resistor needed. The 70 % maximum duty cycle and 11.5 V to 23.5 V supply range suit universal offline inputs (85–265 VAC) with enough headroom for brownout conditions. The 13 V start-up threshold ensures clean power-on sequencing without external start-up resistors.

Built-in protection reduces BOM count

Current limiting and over-temperature protection are integrated — no external sense resistor or thermal shutdown circuit. The output isolation is configurable as either isolated (opto-coupler feedback) or non-isolated, giving the layout engineer one footprint for both designs. The through-hole 7-DIP package (0.300-inch body) allows manual prototyping and rework without hot-air equipment.

The base product number VIPER16 covers multiple package and tape options, so the same die is available in surface-mount (SO-8) if a future board shrink requires it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum output power of VIPER16LN?

The VIPER16LN is rated for 10 W output power in flyback, buck, or buck-boost topologies. Actual achievable power depends on input voltage, ambient temperature, transformer design, and heatsinking — the 10 W figure assumes typical off-line conditions with adequate thermal management.

Does VIPER16LN have overcurrent protection?

Yes, the device includes built-in current limiting fault protection. No external sense resistor is required; the protection cycle is automatic with hiccup-mode restart.

Does VIPER16LN require an external heatsink?

The 7-DIP package can dissipate up to about 1.5 W in still air without a heatsink, depending on ambient temperature. The datasheet thermal resistance figures guide the sizing.
