700V flyback switcher — what it does in the supply
The STMicroelectronics VIPER100A-E is a monolithic flyback switching regulator from the VIPER™ series, integrating a 700V avalanche-rugged power MOSFET and PWM controller in a single Pentawatt-5 HV package. It delivers up to 100 W in isolated or non-isolated offline converters, targeting AC-DC adapters, auxiliary supplies, and industrial power stages where board space is tight.
200 kHz switching — transformer size trade-off
Switching at up to 200 kHz lets you shrink the flyback transformer and output filter capacitance compared to 65–100 kHz designs, but pushes the snubber and layout discipline — the leakage-inductance spike at turn-off needs a well-placed RCD clamp to stay within the 700V breakdown.
Control and protection features
Built-in fault protection includes current limiting and over-temperature shutdown. The enable pin, frequency control, and soft-start give the designer flexibility to tailor the converter's startup behaviour and EMI profile without external sequencing logic.
