800 V breakdown — the primary-side margin for off-line flyback
The VIPER0PLDTR integrates an 800 V avalanche-rated power MOSFET with the controller in a single 16-SOIC package. That 800 V rating provides headroom for the leakage-inductance spike at turn-off in off-line flyback designs. The part delivers up to 12 W continuous, which sets the application envelope: auxiliary supplies for industrial controls, smart-meter PSUs, appliance control boards, and bias rails for larger converters.
Three topologies from one controller — BOM consolidation
The VIPER0PLDTR supports buck, buck-boost, and flyback topologies, with output isolation configurable as either isolated or non-isolated. This allows a single qualified part to serve multiple power rail configurations. The fixed 60 kHz switching frequency is a deliberate choice: low enough to keep the flyback transformer core volume manageable for a 12 W design, high enough to stay above the audible band. Because the frequency does not fold back under light load, the EMI filter must be designed for the full 60 kHz fundamental and its harmonics — no frequency spread to reduce peak emissions.
Protection set and supply range
Fault protection covers current limiting, overload, over-temperature, and short circuit — the four events that kill an off-line supply in the field. The start-up voltage is 8 V, a typical threshold for off-line controllers that ensures the bulk capacitor has charged enough before the IC begins switching. The duty cycle is capped at 80%, which is standard for flyback controllers to prevent transformer saturation during start-up or transient overload.
