Product details

8 W offline switcher with 800 V avalanche-rugged MOSFET

The VIPER06XSTR is an offline switching regulator from ST's VIPer™ plus family, integrating a power MOSFET and PWM controller in a single 10-SOP package. It delivers up to 8 W in a flyback or buck topology, with the internal 800 V breakdown MOSFET handling universal mains input (85–265 VAC) with margin for line surges. Switching at 30 kHz, the part uses a fixed-frequency architecture that simplifies transformer design compared to higher-frequency parts, though the magnetics will be physically larger. The 70% maximum duty cycle supports moderate step-down ratios in flyback designs.

Supply and startup voltages that set the bias rail

The Vcc supply range spans 11.5 V to 23.5 V, with a 13 V startup threshold. This means the auxiliary winding must deliver at least 13 V to kick the controller on, and the bias rail needs to stay below 23.5 V during steady-state operation — a common range for off-line flyback bias windings. The junction temperature rating of -40°C to 150°C covers industrial and outdoor enclosures, but the 150°C absolute maximum junction temperature means the thermal design must keep the junction below that at full load and high ambient. The 10-SSOP package has a moderate thermal pad; a 4-layer board with thermal vias under the exposed pad is recommended for sustained 8 W output.

As an active, non-obsolete part, it is sourced through our distribution network per RFQ.

Frequently asked questions

What is the switching frequency of VIPER06XSTR?

The internal oscillator runs at 30 kHz fixed frequency. This is a relatively low switching speed, which eases EMI filter design but requires larger magnetics compared to 60 kHz or 100 kHz switchers.

What is the difference between VIPER06XSTR and VIPer12A?

The VIPER06XSTR is a newer VIPer™ plus device with an 800 V MOSFET and 8 W output capability, while the VIPer12A is an older 730 V part rated for 12 W. The VIPER06XSTR uses a 10-SOP package versus the VIPer12A's DIP-8/SO-8. They are not pin-compatible; the VIPER06XSTR has a different pinout and additional protection features like open-loop fault detection.
