8 W offline switcher with 800 V avalanche-rugged MOSFET
The VIPER06XSTR is an offline switching regulator from ST's VIPer™ plus family, integrating a power MOSFET and PWM controller in a single 10-SOP package. It delivers up to 8 W in a flyback or buck topology, with the internal 800 V breakdown MOSFET handling universal mains input (85–265 VAC) with margin for line surges. Switching at 30 kHz, the part uses a fixed-frequency architecture that simplifies transformer design compared to higher-frequency parts, though the magnetics will be physically larger. The 70% maximum duty cycle supports moderate step-down ratios in flyback designs.
Supply and startup voltages that set the bias rail
The Vcc supply range spans 11.5 V to 23.5 V, with a 13 V startup threshold. This means the auxiliary winding must deliver at least 13 V to kick the controller on, and the bias rail needs to stay below 23.5 V during steady-state operation — a common range for off-line flyback bias windings. The junction temperature rating of -40°C to 150°C covers industrial and outdoor enclosures, but the 150°C absolute maximum junction temperature means the thermal design must keep the junction below that at full load and high ambient. The 10-SSOP package has a moderate thermal pad; a 4-layer board with thermal vias under the exposed pad is recommended for sustained 8 W output.
