The VIPER06LN integrates a 800 V avalanche-rugged MOSFET and a PWM controller in a single 7-lead DIP package, supporting buck or flyback topologies with output isolation set by the transformer design. The 8 W power rating is the practical ceiling for a continuous-load offline supply — think auxiliary housekeeping rails, appliance control boards, or IoT gateway PSUs. The 60 kHz switching frequency keeps the transformer small enough for a compact layout.
Start-up voltage and supply range — design-in checklist
The start-up threshold is 13 V; once running, the Vcc range is 11.5 V to 23.5 V. That 1.5 V hysteresis means the controller latches off cleanly if the auxiliary winding voltage dips during a brownout. Fault protection covers current limiting, open-loop detection, and over-temperature shutdown — no external sense resistor needed for cycle-by-cycle current limit, which saves a BOM line and a PCB trace.
