Phase-control SCR in a TO-220 tab package
The STMicroelectronics TYN616RG is a standard-recovery SCR (silicon-controlled rectifier) in a TO-220 through-hole package, designed for line-frequency phase-control and AC-switching applications. It blocks 600 V off-state and conducts 16 A RMS (10 A average) on-state continuous current, with a non-repetitive surge rating of 160 A at 50 Hz and 167 A at 60 Hz.
On-state current, surge tolerance, and trigger drive
The 160 A/167 A surge capability covers motor inrush, capacitive-load charging, and fuse-coordination headroom without exceeding the device's I²t limit. Gate trigger requirements are 25 mA maximum at 1.5 V maximum — a standard logic-level optocoupler or a small-signal transistor can drive it directly. The 40 mA maximum holding current means the SCR stays latched once triggered as long as the load current stays above that threshold; below it the device commutates off. Off-state leakage is 5 µA maximum at rated voltage, and on-state voltage drop is 1.6 V maximum at the rated average current — the conduction loss at 10 A average is roughly 16 W, which sets the heatsink thermal resistance target.
