1 kV SCR for line-voltage phase control
The STMicroelectronics TYN1012RG is a standard-recovery SCR in a TO-220-3 through-hole package, rated for 1 kV off-state voltage and 12 A RMS on-state current. It is designed for 50/60 Hz line-frequency phase-control applications such as motor speed controllers, industrial heaters, lighting dimmers, and AC/DC power rectification where the blocking voltage must withstand 230 VAC or 400 VAC mains with margin.
Gate drive and trigger margin
Maximum gate trigger current is 15 mA, with a maximum gate trigger voltage of 1.3 V. This sets a straightforward drive requirement — a standard optocoupler or a small-signal transistor can fire the gate without a dedicated driver IC. The 30 mA maximum holding current means the SCR will stay latched once triggered as long as the load current stays above that threshold; below it the device commutates off.
Surge rating and fuse coordination
Non-repetitive surge current is 145 A at 60 Hz (140 A at 50 Hz). This surge capability governs the fuse or circuit breaker rating upstream — a fast-acting semiconductor fuse rated around 15–20 A RMS will typically clear before the SCR's I²t limit is exceeded during a short-circuit event or capacitive inrush.
On-state voltage and conduction loss
Maximum on-state voltage is 1.6 V at rated current.
Off-state leakage and temperature stability
Maximum off-state leakage current is 5 µA at rated 1 kV blocking voltage. This low leakage is important in standby or light-load conditions — it prevents self-heating in the off state and avoids nuisance triggering of sensitive gate circuits at elevated junction temperatures.
It is ROHS3 compliant.
