40 A RMS at 1.2 kV — the blocking and conduction budget
The TN4050-12PI is a standard-recovery SCR rated for 40 A RMS on-state current and 1.2 kV off-state blocking voltage — the headline numbers that decide whether it handles the load current and withstands the peak bus voltage in a motor-drive snubber or battery-charger phase-control circuit. Non-repetitive surge capability is 400 A at 50 Hz and 420 A at 60 Hz, giving headroom for the inrush that flows when a discharged capacitor bank or cold filament hits the SCR before the gate is fully triggered.
TOP-3 through-hole — board-fit and thermal path
The TOP-3 package (also known as TOP3) is a through-hole power package with a metal tab that bolts directly to a heatsink or clips into a standard spring-clip heatsink — the junction-to-case thermal path is through the tab, so the PCB copper alone is not the primary heat spreader.
Gate drive and holding current — what the trigger circuit needs to deliver
Maximum gate trigger current is 50 mA and maximum gate trigger voltage is 1.5 V — the drive circuit must source at least this into the gate-cathode junction to guarantee turn-on across the full temperature range; a 100 mA gate pulse with a series resistor is a common margin. Holding current is 100 mA maximum — once the SCR is latched, the load current must stay above this threshold or the device will commutate off at the next zero-crossing; this matters in lightly loaded phase-control circuits where the load current dips near the hold level.
