Product details

800 V off-state, 8 A RMS — Snubberless triac for inductive loads

The STMicroelectronics T835T-8T is an Alternistor - Snubberless triac rated for 800 V off-state voltage and 8 A RMS on-state current, housed in a TO-220 through-hole package. The Snubberless™ design means the device can switch inductive loads — motors, solenoids, transformers — without the external RC snubber network normally required to prevent false triggering from voltage transients.

Maximum gate trigger current (Igt) is 35 mA, and the maximum gate trigger voltage (Vgt) is 1.3 V. The hold current (Ih) is 40 mA maximum. These values tell the drive circuit designer what the MCU output or discrete driver must deliver to reliably turn the triac on and keep it latched through the zero-cross.

150°C junction — thermal headroom for enclosed power stages

The 150°C max allows the triac to run in warm environments — inside a motor drive enclosure, behind a panel, or near a heat source — without derating the 8 A RMS current. The TO-220 package with a heatsink tab lets the designer bolt it to a chassis or dedicated heatsink; the thermal resistance from junction to case determines the heatsink size needed to keep Tj below 150°C at full load.

Non-repetitive surge current — 60 A, 63 A

The T835T-8T can withstand a non-repetitive surge current of 60 A at 50 Hz and 63 A at 60 Hz. This rating is critical for applications where the triac must survive inrush from a motor start, capacitor charging, or a brief line transient without failing short. The surge rating is a one-shot event; the device must cool between surges.

It is ROHS3 compliant.

Frequently asked questions

What are the alternatives to the T835T-8T?

A surface-mount alternative in the same Snubberless™ Alternistor family is the T1235-600G, rated at 600 V off-state and 12 A RMS, in a D2PAK package. For a through-hole logic-level triac with a lower 6 A rating, the BTA06-600SRG is an option, though it uses a sensitive gate and requires a different drive circuit.
