Product details

Snubberless™ Alternistor – 600V / 16A in D²Pak

The T1650-600G-TR is an STMicroelectronics Snubberless™ Alternistor triac rated for 600 V off-state voltage and 16 A RMS on-state current in a D²Pak (TO-263) surface-mount package. The Alternistor structure provides improved commutating dV/dt performance over a conventional triac, making it suited for motor and transformer loads where the current-zero crossing is abrupt.

Parametric fit – gate drive and surge margin

Gate trigger current (Igt) is 35 mA max, and gate trigger voltage (Vgt) is 1.3 V max – a standard logic-level gate drive from a microcontroller I/O pin or optocoupler can fire it directly, though a series resistor is still needed to limit gate current. Hold current (Ih) of 35 mA max ensures the triac latches on once triggered and does not drop out prematurely under light load. The non-repetitive surge rating of 160 A at 50 Hz / 168 A at 60 Hz gives headroom for motor-start inrush or capacitor charging events.

Package and thermal design note

The tab is internally connected to the MT2 terminal – the PCB layout must account for this common connection and isolate the pad if the heatsink is grounded.

Frequently asked questions

Is the T1650-600G-TR obsolete?

No – the product status is Active. There is no EOL notice or successor announced. It remains a current production part from STMicroelectronics.

What is the difference between T1650-600G and T1650-600G-TR?

The T1650-600G-TR suffix indicates tape-and-reel packaging for automated assembly; the T1650-600G is typically supplied in tube or bulk. The electrical ratings and package are identical.

Is the T1650-600G-TR suitable for dimmer circuits?

Yes – the 600 V off-state rating covers 120–277 VAC mains, and the 16 A RMS on-state handles standard incandescent or LED dimmer loads. The Snubberless design reduces the external component count around the triac. For phase-control dimming, verify that the gate trigger circuit can supply the 35 mA Igt reliably at the desired conduction angle.
