Device identity and key ratings
The T1610-600G-TR is a sensitive-gate TRIAC from STMicroelectronics, rated for 600 V off-state voltage and 16 A RMS on-state current in a single-device configuration. The 10 mA maximum gate trigger current (Igt) and 1.3 V maximum gate trigger voltage (Vgt) allow direct drive from low-power logic or microcontroller I/O without an intermediate driver stage — a common requirement in phase-control and AC-switching circuits where the control signal is limited to a few milliamps. The 15 mA maximum holding current (Ih) ensures the device latches on once triggered and does not drop out prematurely under light load conditions, which is critical for inductive loads like small motors or solenoids where the load current may dip near the zero crossing.
Package and thermal integration
Housed in a D2PAK (TO-263AB) surface-mount package, the T1610-600G-TR is supplied on Tape & Reel (TR) or Cut Tape (CT) for automated assembly. The exposed copper tab on the D2PAK provides a low-thermal-resistance path to the PCB — the board's copper area and via pattern under the tab set the junction-to-ambient thermal performance, not the package alone. The operating junction temperature range of -40°C to 125°C covers industrial and automotive under-hood environments. At the upper end, the 16 A RMS rating must be derated per the datasheet curve; the 125°C limit is the absolute junction ceiling, not a continuous operating target.
Surge and transient capability
Non-repetitive surge current is rated at 160 A for a 50 Hz half-cycle and 168 A for a 60 Hz half-cycle. This figure governs the device's ability to survive inrush events from capacitive loads or lamp filaments — a 16 A TRIAC with a 160 A surge rating can handle a cold-filament inrush of roughly 10× the steady-state rating for one cycle, which is typical for incandescent or halogen loads.
