Forward drop and thermal budget at 8 A
At 8 A forward current the typical forward voltage is 3.4 V, which sets a conduction loss of about 27 W at full rated current — a figure that demands a heatsink with adequate thermal mass for continuous operation. The junction temperature ceiling is 175 °C, so the thermal design must keep the junction below that limit under worst-case ambient and load. Reverse leakage at 600 V is 20 µA, negligible for the loss calculation but worth noting for high-temperature standby efficiency.
Package and mounting — TO-220AC through-hole
The TO-220AC (TO-220-2) package is a standard through-hole form factor with the anode on pin 1 and cathode on the metal tab. The tab is the thermal path to the heatsink — plan for a mica or silicone pad and thermal compound if the heatsink is at ground potential. The through-hole mount suits point-to-point wiring on prototype boards and production assemblies where wave-solder is the primary process.
