What the 45 ns trr buys you in a switching supply
The STTH8R06G is a fast recovery epitaxial diode rated for 8 A average rectified current with 600 V reverse voltage blocking. Its 45 ns reverse recovery time suits continuous-current-mode power factor correction stages, output rectification in switch-mode supplies, and snubber clamping. The 2.9 V forward drop at 8 A is the conduction loss figure the thermal design must budget against.
STMicroelectronics lists the STTH8R06G as obsolete. The part is not coming back into franchised distribution stock. If you are qualifying a replacement design, look for a same-package (D2PAK) ultrafast diode with equal or faster trr at the 8 A / 600 V operating point — several manufacturers offer pin-compatible parts in this performance tier, but no single official cross-reference is published by ST.
D2PAK — the thermal and mechanical interface
The STTH8R06G ships in the D2PAK (TO-263-3) surface-mount package with an exposed tab that is the cathode terminal. The package footprint matches the standard D2PAK land pattern; no unusual pad geometry required. The tube shipping medium is the handling concern for the rework bench — D2PAK tubes are industry-standard and feed into most pick-and-place feeders without changeover.
