600 V, 5 A ultrafast diode — what the 40 ns trr buys you
The STTH5R06B is a 600 V, 5 A ultrafast rectifier from STMicroelectronics in a DPAK surface-mount package. Its 40 ns reverse recovery time places it in the fast-recovery class for continuous-current switching above 200 mA, making it a fit for power-factor-correction boost stages, flyback snubbers, and output rectification in medium-power SMPS designs.
Switching loss and thermal budget
A 40 ns trr at 5 A forward current means the diode recovers before the MOSFET body diode in a hard-switching boost converter, reducing the reverse-recovery charge that the switch must absorb. The 2.9 V forward drop at 5 A is the conduction-loss floor — at 5 A average, expect about 14.5 W peak dissipation before derating for junction temperature. The 175°C maximum junction rating gives headroom for high ambient or tight thermal layouts, but the DPAK's thermal resistance demands a copper pour on the drain tab to keep Tj below the limit.
Leakage and blocking margin
Reverse leakage is specified at 20 µA at 600 V — a clean number that lets you budget standby loss in a PFC stage without over-allocating heatsink area. The 600 V blocking voltage gives margin for 400 VDC bus rails with ringing; for 800 V systems or high-line surges, you would step up to a 1 kV rated part.
