50 A / 600 V fast recovery diode — hard-switching workhorse
The STMicroelectronics STTH50W06SW is a standard fast recovery power diode rated for 50 A average rectified current and 600 V reverse voltage, housed in a TO-247-3 through-hole package. Its 45 ns reverse recovery time places it in the fast-recovery class (≤500 ns, >200 mA Io), making it suited for hard-switching topologies where reverse-recovery charge drives turn-on loss in the companion switch.
45 ns trr — switching loss and snubber design
A 45 ns trr at 50 A forward current means the diode clears its stored charge quickly, limiting the current spike through the IGBT or MOSFET during the complementary device's turn-on. This reduces the snubber capacitance needed across the diode and keeps the switching node voltage overshoot within the 600 V blocking margin.
TO-247-3 — thermal and mechanical fit
The TO-247-3 through-hole package provides a large copper tab for heatsink attachment, sized for the 50 A continuous current. The 2.4 V forward voltage drop at 50 A produces 120 W conduction loss at full load, so the thermal interface to the heatsink — thermal pad compound, mounting torque, and airflow — determines the junction temperature. The 175 °C Tj(max) gives headroom, but the heatsink must keep the case temperature below about 150 °C to stay within the SOA.
