Schottky barrier for low-voltage rails
The STPS140A is a 40 V, 1 A Schottky rectifier in the DO-214AC (SMA) surface-mount package — a common choice for low-voltage DC rails where forward drop and switching speed matter. Its 550 mV maximum forward voltage at 1 A keeps conduction losses low in a 3.3 V or 5 V supply path, and the 12 µA reverse leakage at 40 V is typical for a Schottky of this voltage class. The fast recovery speed (≤ 500 ns, > 200 mA) means it handles the reverse-recovery transient in a switching converter without the stored-charge penalty of a PN diode — relevant for a boost or flyback stage running at tens of kilohertz.
SMA footprint and hand-solder friendliness
The DO-214AC (SMA) body is one of the more forgiving SMD packages for hand assembly — the two-terminal tab-and-lead layout is easy to align and solder with a standard iron, no hot-air or reflow oven required. The junction temperature limit of 150 °C (max) is standard for a Schottky in this current range; the SMA package's copper tab on the cathode side conducts heat into the PCB pad, so a reasonable copper area on the board helps keep the junction within limits at full 1 A load.
