Thermal budget and mounting
Maximum power dissipation is 210 W at the case temperature, so a properly sized heatsink is non-negotiable at high load. The junction temperature rating of 150 °C defines the derating curve. The TO-220 package with a metal tab requires a thermal pad or mica insulator and a dab of thermal compound for good heat transfer to the heatsink. Through-hole mounting means the leads carry the mechanical load — no additional support needed for most board weights.
Gate drive and threshold
The maximum gate threshold voltage is 5 V at 250 µA drain current, and the recommended drive voltage for minimum on-resistance is 10 V. A 12 V gate drive rail is the typical choice; the absolute maximum gate-to-source voltage is ±25 V, so a 15 V zener clamp on the gate is optional but not required with a clean 12 V supply.
