The TO-220-3 through-hole package is a breadboard-friendly choice. You can hand-solder it without hot air, replace it with a desoldering pump, and bolt it to a heatsink with a single screw. No fine-pitch alignment, no reflow profile — just a soldering iron and a bit of flux. For a prototype or a low-volume production run, that saves setup time.
STMicroelectronics lists the STP170N8F7 as obsolete. That means no factory orders, no last-time-buy window — the remaining stock lives in independent distribution and surplus inventories.
