What this 8-bit MCU brings to an automotive ECU
The STMicroelectronics STM8AL3146TCY is an 8-bit MCU, AEC-Q100 qualified and specified across -40 to 125 °C. It runs at 16 MHz from an internal oscillator, carries 16 KB Flash and 1 KB EEPROM, and integrates a 22-channel 12-bit ADC plus one 12-bit DAC.
This is not an immediate EOL — ST still supports existing production — but the part is no longer targeted for new program wins. For a BOM freeze on an existing ECU, this means the last-time-buy window is open; secure the volume you need for the remaining production run.
16 MHz core and 16 KB Flash — sizing the node
16 MHz on an 8-bit core is adequate for LIN-bus polling, window-lift logic, or seat-position memory — not for high-rate sensor fusion or motor-field control. The 16 KB Flash and 2 KB RAM suit a compact firmware image with a small RTOS or a state-machine loop. The 1 KB EEPROM holds calibration constants or fault codes without external storage.
