Why this MCU exists on your BOM
The STM32L051K8U6 is an STMicroelectronics ARM Cortex-M0+ 32-bit MCU from the STM32L0 ultra-low-power series.
Memory budget and what fits
The 2 KB of EEPROM is a real advantage — you can store calibration constants, node IDs, or fault logs without wearing the Flash. If your firmware image is over 50 KB or you need more than 8 KB of runtime heap, you are looking at the wrong density. For a Modbus RTU slave, a temperature logger, or a simple motor controller, this is the right fit.
It is not automotive-grade (no AEC-Q100 in the record), so skip it for under-hood or chassis applications.
Lifecycle status — still a current design-in part
ST lists this as an active product. The base number STM32L051 covers several package and memory variants, so if you need a different pin count or density later, the migration path stays within the same family.
