NPN power transistor in DPAK — what you're working with
The STMicroelectronics STD878T4 is a 5 A, 30 V NPN bipolar power transistor housed in a DPAK (TO-252-3) surface-mount package. It's a general-purpose switching transistor suited for medium-current loads like relay drivers, solenoid actuators, and DC-DC converter pass elements where the rail stays under 30 V. The 15 W power dissipation ceiling and 150°C junction temperature rating mean the DPAK tab needs a decent copper area or a small heatsink if you're pushing toward 2 A continuous.
The 5 A collector current (Ic max) is the headline number, but the 350 mV Vce saturation at 2 A base drive (50 mA Ib) is the real conduction loss spec — at 2 A that's 0.7 W dissipation in the die alone, which eats into the 15 W power budget fast at elevated ambient temperatures. The 30 V Vceo breakdown gives you about 6 V of headroom on a 24 V rail, enough for most industrial loads but tight if you see transients above 30 V.
