1500W bidirectional TVS for 70V rail protection

The STMicroelectronics SMCJ70CA-TR is a 1500W bidirectional transient voltage suppression (TVS) diode from the SMCJ TRANSIL™ series, designed to protect sensitive electronics from voltage transients induced by lightning, inductive load switching, and electrostatic discharge. It is a general-purpose protection device suited for industrial, telecom, and automotive environments where a 70V nominal rail needs clamping to 146V maximum during a surge event.

When a transient exceeds 77.8V (minimum breakdown voltage,), the device starts to avalanche and clamp. The bidirectional nature means the same device protects both positive and negative transients, saving board space compared to two unidirectional diodes back-to-back.

The SMCJ70CA-TR is supplied in the DO-214AB (SMC) surface-mount package.

Can SMCJ70CA-TR be used for 24V protection?

No. The reverse standoff voltage is 70V, which is the maximum continuous voltage the device can block. For a 24V rail, a TVS with a standoff voltage of 24V to 30V would be appropriate.
