The clamping voltage is held to 35.5 V at the peak pulse current of 17.7 A (10/1000 µs waveform).
Bidirectional — one device covers both polarities
A single bidirectional channel means the SMBJ22CA-TR clamps transients of either polarity with one part. That simplifies board layout and reduces component count compared to placing two unidirectional TVS diodes back-to-back.
The wide range also gives margin for self-heating during repetitive surge events — the junction temperature must stay under 150°C for reliable clamping.
That means no imminent end-of-life risk for production BOMs — it remains a current, manufacturable part.
