Transient protection for 18V rails
The STMicroelectronics SMBJ18A-TR is a 600W unidirectional TVS diode from the TRANSIL™ series, designed to clamp transients on 18V nominal supply rails. It is a Zener-type device.
What the 600W rating means for your board
For a given transient energy, a lower clamping voltage means the TVS absorbs more current; here the 21.5A peak pulse current at the 29.2V clamp gives a realistic picture of the surge it can handle. On an 18V rail, this part will catch most common-mode and differential spikes from inductive loads or hot-plug events without letting the rail rise above 29.2V. If your circuit has a tighter voltage tolerance, you would step to a lower-voltage variant in the SMBJ family; if you need more surge capacity, the SMCJ series offers 1500W in a larger package.
Housed in a surface-mount package, the SMBJ18A-TR fits a standard two-pad footprint shared across the SMBJ family. The unidirectional configuration means one device protects a single rail.
