Voltage window and clamping performance

The 298 A peak pulse current rating (8/20 µs) gives substantial surge-handling margin for industrial and telecom line protection.
Bidirectional vs unidirectional — one part for both polarities
This eliminates the need for two unidirectional TVS diodes in anti-series on AC signal lines or data pairs that swing bipolar. For a 5 V rail that never goes negative, a unidirectional part like the SM6T6V8A (same family, unidirectional) would be the alternative, but the bidirectional version simplifies BOM and board area when polarity is unknown or bidirectional.
