The 18.8 V reverse standoff voltage means this diode will not conduct on a nominal 18 V rail, but it begins to avalanche at a minimum of 20.9 V. The clamping voltage caps at 30.6 V when the peak pulse current reaches 102 A (8/20 µs waveform). For a design engineer, the margin between the rail voltage and the breakdown threshold determines how much transient overvoltage the system can ride through before the diode starts shunting current; the clamping voltage then tells the downstream components the maximum voltage they will see during a surge event.
