What this TRANSIL TVS protects and where it goes
The STMicroelectronics SM6T22A is a 600W unidirectional transient voltage suppression diode from the SM6T TRANSIL™ series, packaged in a DO-214AA (SMB) surface-mount case. The clamping voltage is held to 30.6V at the peak pulse current of 102A (8/20µs waveform). This part suits industrial control, telecom, and automotive auxiliary circuits where a single unidirectional channel must shunt positive spikes to ground.
For the 8/20µs waveform the peak current is 102A, which is the figure to use when calculating clamping margin against the expected surge. The 18.8V standoff voltage means the SM6T22A will not conduct appreciably below that level, so it can sit across an 18V rail without leakage issues. The 20.9V minimum breakdown ensures the avalanche triggers before the protected circuitry sees a damaging overvoltage.
The single unidirectional channel occupies one device per protected line. No power line protection feature is present — this is a signal- or secondary-rail clamp, not a primary mains protector.
