It sits across a 171 V nominal rail and stays out of the circuit until a transient drives the line above its 190 V minimum breakdown voltage. At that point it avalanches and clamps the surge to 353 V maximum at the rated 11.3 A peak pulse current (8/20 µs waveform).

Will SM6T200CA replace SM6T200A?

The SM6T200A is the unidirectional version of this same TRANSIL™ series. The SM6T200CA is the bidirectional variant. They share the same breakdown and clamping voltages and the same SMB package, but the SM6T200A has a single anode-cathode orientation while the SM6T200CA clamps both polarities. If the original design used the SM6T200A in a circuit that only sees positive-going transients, the bidirectional part will work electrically but the board may have a different silkscreen marking for polarity.
