Package and rework — SMB (DO-214AA)
The SM6T15AY comes in a surface-mount DO-214AA (SMB) package. The SMB footprint is a common size for TVS diodes in this power class, and its two-terminal layout makes hand-replacement straightforward under a hot-air station — the part lifts cleanly with preheat around 150°C, and the pad geometry is forgiving enough that a re-tin and reflow cycle is routine. Orientation is marked by a cathode band on the body, so pin 1 identification is unambiguous.
Clamping voltage and the protected rail
The 27.2V maximum clamping voltage is the ceiling the rail sees during a transient event. For a 12V nominal system (with a typical tolerance up to 16V), that clamp leaves enough margin below the 40V or 60V rating of downstream DC-DC converters and linear regulators. The 12.8V standoff voltage means the diode does not conduct at normal operating levels, so leakage is negligible at 25°C.
