Its 6.4 V minimum breakdown voltage triggers clamping at 13.4 V maximum under peak pulse current, keeping downstream circuitry within safe limits during load-dump or surge events. The 5 V reverse standoff voltage is the continuous DC level the TVS blocks without conducting. Above 6.4 V (the minimum breakdown point), the diode begins to avalanche, and at the peak pulse current of 174 A (8/20 µs waveform) the clamping voltage is held to 13.4 V maximum. That 13.4 V ceiling is what a 5 V regulator or ASIC input sees during the transient — a critical number for the downstream device's absolute-maximum rating. For a 5 V rail in an automotive ECU, the 6.4 V breakdown provides enough margin above the nominal supply to avoid nuisance triggering from normal ripple, while clamping early enough to protect 40 V-rated components.
