3 kW automotive TVS for 12 V rails
The STMicroelectronics SM30T12CAY is a single-channel bidirectional Zener TVS diode rated for 3000 W peak pulse power (10/1000 µs waveform), with a 10 V reverse standoff voltage and a maximum clamping voltage of 17 V at 176 A peak pulse current. It is qualified to AEC-Q101, making it suitable for automotive electronics where transient protection on 12 V power or signal lines is required.
17 V clamp — what it protects
The 17 V clamping voltage means the SM30T12CAY holds the protected line below 17 V during a surge event, which is within the absolute maximum ratings of most 12 V-rated ICs and modules in automotive systems. The 176 A peak pulse current rating gives a sense of the surge energy it can absorb: a 3 kW pulse at the clamp voltage. This is a typical protection spec for load-dump and ISO 7637-2 pulses on 12 V vehicle power rails.
Bidirectional — one device for AC or bipolar lines
This is useful on signal lines that swing below ground (e.g., CAN bus, LIN bus, sensor outputs) or on AC-coupled interfaces where the protection device must not introduce DC offset.
AEC-Q101 and the temperature range
For designs targeting automotive OEM requirements, this qualification is a gate item — the SM30T12CAY carries it without needing a separate automotive-grade variant.
For new designs, this means no immediate obsolescence risk.
