What this TRANSIL™ bidirectional TVS does on the board
It is a general-purpose protection device, not a voltage regulator — the Zener label refers to the avalanche breakdown mechanism used for clamping, not for regulation duty. Rated for 1500W peak pulse power (1.5kW) per the 10/1000µs waveform, it handles a peak pulse current of 187A on the 8/20µs waveform, clamping a 25.6V standoff rail to a maximum of 53.5V before the silicon gives way.
For a 24V nominal rail (common in industrial and automotive systems), the 25.6V reverse standoff voltage sits comfortably above the steady-state supply, while the 53.5V clamp gives the downstream DC-DC converter or load switch a hard ceiling during a surge. The 28.5V minimum breakdown voltage means the device starts conducting at a level that won't nuisance-trip on normal ripple, but will catch a 30V transient before it reaches the protected IC. No power line protection is built in — this is a line-to-ground clamp, not a series protector.
Package and footprint — DO-214AB (SMC)
Housed in a DO-214AB (SMC) surface-mount package, the SM15T30CA takes the standard SMC footprint. The SMC body is larger than the smaller SMA/SMB packages, which matters for the thermal mass needed to absorb the 1500W pulse without exceeding the 150°C junction limit. Surface-mount only — no through-hole variant in this order code.
