The SM15T18A is a 1500W (1.5kW) unidirectional Zener TVS diode from ST's TRANSIL™ family, packaged in a DO-214AB (SMC) for surface-mount assembly. Its 15.3V reverse standoff voltage lets it sit on a 12V or 15V rail without conducting leakage, while the 32.5V maximum clamping voltage limits the transient voltage seen by the protected load.
Clamping voltage and breakdown — sizing the protection margin
The minimum breakdown voltage is 17.1V, so the diode starts conducting between 17.1V and roughly 19V (typical). The clamping voltage of 32.5V at the peak pulse current (308A for an 8/20µs waveform) is the hard ceiling the downstream circuitry must survive. If your load's absolute maximum rating is, say, 30V, this part leaves only 2.5V of headroom — a TVS with a lower clamping voltage (e.g., the SM15T18A's sibling with a 28V clamp) would be a tighter fit. For a 12V rail with 20V-rated downstream parts, the 32.5V clamp is adequate.
Package and mounting — DO-214AB SMC
The SMC body handles the 1500W pulse without requiring a heatsink, but the PCB copper area under the package acts as the thermal sink — a solid ground-plane connection and adequate pad size are assumed.
