1500W peak pulse power in a DO-214AB SMC package
The STMicroelectronics SM15T12CA is a bidirectional Zener TVS diode from the TRANSIL™ SM15T series, designed to clamp voltage transients on a single line. It delivers 1500W of peak pulse power per the 10/1000µs waveform, with a reverse standoff voltage of 10.2V and a maximum clamping voltage of 21.7V at the peak pulse current of 461A (8/20µs waveform). This part is a general-purpose transient suppressor suited for power supply rails, I/O lines, and telecom interfaces where a single bidirectional device protects against surges of either polarity.
The 21.7V clamping voltage at the 8/20µs peak pulse current of 461A tells you the maximum voltage the downstream circuitry will see during a surge event. For a 12V rail, this leaves a 9.7V margin above the nominal — enough to keep most 12V-rated ICs within their absolute maximum ratings if the trace inductance is managed. The 1500W rating at 10/1000µs is the standard telecom surge waveform; the part also handles the shorter 8/20µs waveform at a higher peak current, which is the common industrial ESD/surge combination. The bidirectional configuration means a single SM15T12CA replaces two unidirectional diodes back-to-back, saving board space and BOM count on AC-coupled or bipolar signal lines.
