What this TVS does on the board
The STMicroelectronics SM15T10CA is a bidirectional Zener-type TVS diode from the TRANSIL series, designed to clamp voltage transients on a single line. It delivers 1500W (1.5kW) peak pulse power per the 10/1000µs waveform, with a reverse standoff voltage of 8.55V and a maximum clamping voltage of 18.6V at the rated peak pulse current. The single bidirectional channel means it protects both polarities in one package, simplifying layout for AC or bipolar DC lines.
Rework and mounting — DO-214AB SMC
Housed in a DO-214AB SMC surface-mount package, this part is straightforward to rework with hot air. The body is large enough to get a good grip with tweezers, and the cathode band (or lack thereof for bidirectional) is clearly marked. Standard SMC footprint, no exposed pad — just align and reflow. No special bake requirements beyond standard MSL handling.
Temperature range and environment
The 150°C limit gives headroom for self-heating during repetitive surge events, but derate the peak pulse power above 25°C per the datasheet curve.
