Dropout and headroom — what the 1.2 V max means for your rail
The 1.2 V dropout at 800 mA is the worst-case voltage difference between input and output needed to maintain regulation. If your input is a 5 V ±5 % rail, that is 4.75 V minimum — still above the dropout ceiling, but with only 250 mV of margin. A 5 V ±10 % rail at 4.5 V min sits right at the dropout boundary; you would need a lower-dropout part or a tighter input tolerance. The 5 mA quiescent current is the current the regulator consumes to run its internal bias — it flows to ground regardless of load. In a battery-powered design drawing microamps in sleep, 5 mA is too high; this part is sized for always-on line-powered circuits, not energy-harvesting or portable gear.

It will not start reliably below freezing — do not use it in outdoor telecom cabinets, automotive under-hood, or cold-storage applications without a heated enclosure.
